Triathlete Kimbeley Yap is already a winner in more ways than one even before she gets into action in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. The 21-year-old is now training in Gold Coast, Brisbane, and two of the top Australian women triathletes are also based there. They are two-time World Championships gold medallist Emma Snowsill and the current Under-23 world champion Annabel Luxford.
Kimbeley is the sole Malaysian triathlete for the Melbourne Games. She earned a place in the Malaysian contingent after winning the gold medal in the Manila SEA Games last December. Team manager Lau Kong Yew said that training in the presence of the two top Australians would inspire Kimbeley to perform well in Melbourne.
"There are some world-class athletes in the Commonwealth Games competition and we do not want to put pressure on her. It will be great for her if she can beat her personal best," said Kong Yew. Kimbeley's personal best time for the race over 1.5km swimming, 40km cycling and a 10km running is 2'03.

The Australians are the undisputed favourites to win the gold medal. At the last Games in Manchester in 2002, Canadian Carol Montgomery took the women's gold with a time of 2'03:17.86.

"The favourites usually do not win," said Kong Yew. "Kimbeley is very determined and it is reflected in her decision to go to Australia early to train for the race. She is in intensive training and has morning and evening sessions."

Kimbeley, a former national swimmer, will not only fight for herself in Melbourne but also for the family, who is footing the bill for the stint in Brisbane. Her half brother, Daniel Bego, who is in the Malaysian swimming team for the Games, is also training in Brisbane.

"My family has been supportive of what we are doing and my mom (Amy Wong) is staying with us," said Kimbeley in a telephone interview from Brisbane. "I have not set any high targets because I am still trying to get back to shape after the off-season. My priority is to finish the race."
