MALAY MAIL, ATHLETICS: Twelve more in PowerBar Team Elite

TWELVE new athletes who have been outstanding in their respective field have been roped into the PowerBar Team Elite (Malaysia) this year. This is in addition to the 14 they have sponsored since the inaugural programme three years ago. The new athletes, who will also act as Powerbar ambassadors, were inducted by Nestle Products healthcare and performance nutrition business manager Emilyn Loo in Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.

Those inducted comprised Ahmad Haidar Anuawar, Ervin Jensen Towle (both cyclists), Bernice Chee Hong Lian (runner/dualathlete), Hairul Azwar Hashim, Kimberley Yap Fui Li, Stephanie Chok, Sheenie Tang Lee Sheen (all tri-athletes), Isaiah Kee Tzen Chin (fitness instructor), Raja Idris Raja Ali (rugby), R. Kunasegaran, Mohd Sharruhaizy Abdul Rahman, (athletics) and Shahrom Abdullah (dualathletes).

Hairul, 28, from Kuala Lumpur, took up the triathlon for two reasons. To reduce weight and to quit smoking. For Sheenie, it was an automatic choice to get included in the elite team when she emerged champion in the Desaru International Triathlon championships in Johor last September. She outshone favourites Dr Fiona Lim and Kimberley Yap, who won the gold medal in the Philippines SEA Games.

Among the other big names are squash player Mohd Azlan Iskandar, who is the National No 1 and World No 13, Yuan Yu Fang, Ngew Sin Mei, Mohd Sharrulhaizy Abdul Rahman – all of whom contributed a gold medal each in the Philippines SEA Games. Sharrulhaizy and Yu Fang bagged the 20km walk in the men's and women's category while Sin Mei won the triple jump. Emilyn said the PowerBar Team Elite programme does not only cater for National athletes but is extended to others who show promising results.
